As far as clothing is concerned the big advance this year is more widespread use of "My Virtual Model"
software integrated with shopping sites. My Virtual Model has been around for quite some time but
seems to be gaining steam. One of the larger proponents is LandsEnd. LandsEnd has built a truck with a full body
scanner and it driving it around the county. You go in, get yourself scanned and voila out pops a cyber
version of yourself as a "My Virtual Model" model. You can then use this model in the LandsEnd store and
presumably in any store that works with this type of virtual model.
If you haven't had the opportunity to use the truck scanner you can build an approximate version of
yourself and virtually try on clothes. The images below are of a model I built up on the site.
It's important to note that these are not "real time" 3D models. The images you manipulate and
and the 3D views are static images that you can manipulate in a limited way. You can't grab and spin the models around
but you can view them, once constructed, from several points of view. It's quite functional. Also the
male version isn't available just yet.
