ActiveWorlds offers the project a rich environment.
The ActiveWorlds browser is primarily a multiuser 3D environment.
It also contains a frame for a Web browser. This lets the developers integrate virtual environments with real photographs and additional QTVR panoramic photos. It's quite compelling to be in a virtual environment with the freedom to walk anywhere and simultaneously have a Web page with photographs and panoramic environments in another frame. Visitors can get a real sense of what the environment is actually like without the travel and airfare!
Virtual Crown, the virtual version of Crown Hall offers visitors a great integration of the virtual and the real. You arrive by traveling from the East or at 1N 3E facing E. (The ActiveWorlds coordinate system is expressed in North, South, East, and West units. The default coordinates for arrival in an environment are called ground zero. You can directly "teleport" to a specific location with the Teleport>To command in the ActiveWorlds browser.) Once there, select the center top center photo to get to the Crown College area.
The V-UCSC project is an exemplary use of 3D for several aspects. The 3D reconstructions provide potential visitors a way of getting familiar with the campus before arrival. The construction by students provides a terrific learning opportunity. The multiuser environment allows social interaction and communities to form. Links to various areas in the 3D environment and links to external Web pages give visitors a rich information resource. Take a look at it; you won't be disappointed.
